Utricularia L. - Bladderworts

The genus Utricularia L. is a diverse group of carnivorous plants with an estimated 228 species worldwide (Fleishmann, 2012). Despite this large number of species, Texas can boast only a handful of species occurring naturally within the state. Those species occurring in Texas are all aquatic, or semi-aquatic, plants that occupy sluggish water bodies or saturated soils along margins of ponds or bogs. The truly aquatic species either float on the surface (with subsurface carnivorous bladders) or are suspended in the water column. The carnivorous bladders are found suspended from the subsurface portion of the plants where they capture various invertebrates. Those species that are semi-aquatic occur in saturated mucky soils, often only visible when the flowering scape is blooming. The remainder of their life cycle is spent as part of the entangled mass of organic matter in the mucky soil substrate in wetland bogs or similar habitats.
