A comprehensive assessment of the bryophyte flora of texas

The basis of much of my research is focused on field inventories of sites throughout Texas.  However, I never miss an opportunity to make collections whenever, and wherever, possible.  This section describes projects, based primarily in Texas, that I am currently involved in across the state.  Also included are some projects based outside Texas, to include the United Kingdom, Mexico, and very soon Costa Rica.  Many of these projects are ongoing, so the reports should be viewed as dynamic and will very likely change as collecting efforts progress.

The compilation and publication of a "Bryophyte Flora of Texas" has been the ultimate goal of this project, and website, from its inception.  What started with an inventory of the "big thicket" in 2007, eventually evolved into an effort to further document the bryophyte flora of the entire state. After some initial research into previous bryological work in the state, it became clear there was ample opportunity for additional investigations in just about any corner of the state.  Ultimately the goals of this entire effort are to:

  • consolidate data for Texas collections from institutions in the state and country

  • increase collections of bryophytes in regions of the state where collections are lacking

  • place an emphasis on common habitats that have been neglected, or under-sampled

  • inventory highly specialized habitats (bogs, glades, outcrops, saline prairies, etc.)

  • generate keys to the identification of bryophytes on an eco-regional basis

Several of the projects on the navigation panel are focused on inventories of specific regions or habitat types in Texas.  Others are an account of opportunities far beyond Texas. Many of these projects are open to participation by interested individuals.
